AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into councillors receiving free lunches while earning tens of thousands of pounds at Essex County Council.

The council's Independent Remuneration Panel will probe free dinners offered in a councillors-only canteen at County Hall.

The investigation was ordered after Green Party members James Abbott and Michael Hoy said the free meals were 'inappropriate'.

The pair tabled a motion at a full council meeting, asking members to accept that free lunches for politicians were not appropriate at a time when services like school transport were being cut.
