Try an activity in Festival of Sport
Thursday, 02 August 2012
RESIDENTS across the borough are being urged to take a break from watching the Olympic Games this weekend and try out a sport themselves.
Waltham Forest’s Festival of Sport takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the Town Hall, in Forest Road, and at Waltham Forest Pool and Track, in Chingford Road, from 11am to 7pm.
Those attending will be able to try out archery, athletics, basketball, boccia, boxing, football, Tai Chi, table tennis, mini-tennis, volleyball and more, as well as speaking to representatives from local clubs.
As well as trying out the sports, there will also be demonstrations for those looking for a less active role on the day, as well as watching action from the Olympics on giant screens.
There will also be competitions, with tickets to see Rizzle Kicks in concert among the prizes.
Council leader Chris Robbins said: “While we’re all glued to our screens watching world-class athletes pour their heart and soul into the Olympic and Paralympic Games it’s never too late to lace up your trainers and give a new sport a go yourself.
“If I’m not mistaken you can actually try your hand at every single Olympic sport here in Waltham Forest, so what better time to get inspired and get involved than the Olympic Year? It’s going to be a great event, so come along to the Festival of Sport, bring your family and see for yourself what this borough has to offer.”
Sunday will also see Godiva Awakes visit the borough. Made by mechanics, artists, theatre makers, puppeteers and engineers to the highest standards of contemporary craftsmanship and driven by cycle power, the 10-metre high Godiva puppet will feature dancers, musicians and pyrotechnicians.
The procession starts at Ridgeway Park, Chingford, moving along to the Crooked Billet and will end at the Festival of Sport at about 4pm.
