Council leader to step down
Thursday, 30 April 2009
STEPPING DOWN: Council leader Clyde Loakes.
THE leader of Waltham Forest Council has announced he will be stepping down.
Councillor Clyde Loakes (Lab, Leytonstone), who took over the top spot in 2003, has announced he will not contest the leadership at this year’s annual meeting after a six-year reign.
Mr Loakes became one of the youngest council leaders in the country when he took over aged just 33.
He will be Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Northampton South in the next general election, which must be called by next year.
Mr Loakes said it was always his intention to step down this year.
He said: “It has been an honour to serve the people of Waltham Forest. No two days have ever been the same.
“I have had the opportunity to work with some truly fantastic people, from all walks of life, who care passionately about their local communities and they want the organisations that serve them and work for to do more for local residents and communities.
“I would not have missed this opportunity for the world.”
Mr Loakes paid tribute to councillors across the political spectrum who have worked with him over the years.
He said: “Without the help and support of so many council colleagues, councillors - across the political divide - and officers, as well as my family I couldn’t have done this job for six months, let alone six years.
“It has been a real team effort and I’d like to thank everyone I have had the pleasure of working with and who has contributed along the way.”
The new leader will be elected at full council on May 21.
