Boris pledges to clean up the city's air supply
Thursday, 15 October 2009
CLEAN AIR: London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has promised to make a difference.
CONVERTING buses to hybrid use, investing money in cycling and preparing the city for the introduction of more electric vehicles are among the plans laid out by the Mayor of London in his plans to clean up the capital’s air.
Boris Johnson published his ‘Clearing the Air’, the draft air quality strategy on Monday, October 5.
The paper outlines the sources of London’s harmful airborn pollutants and proposes an action plan to reduce emissions.
The Mayor said he wanted to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for Londoners.
He said: “Dirty air creates a deeply unpleasant feel to our city. Noxious fumes belched out by our everyday activities affect the most vulnerable in our society, such as children, older people and those with health problems.
“These proposals are calling for everyone to play their part in curbing pollution.”
Key Measures in the scheme include:
* Making taxis and minicabs fall within a ten-year age limit by 2015.
* Introducing stricter emissions rate for HGVs, buses and coaches.
* Creating action plans to deal with the areas where air quality is worst.
* Giving people information about the worst times for air pollution.
The plans have won support from health campaigning group, Asthma UK.
Kate Ravenscroft, campaign manager, said: “We’re happy to see a broad policy.
“We hope these measures will help London meet the target for emissions.”
