VISIT: Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg chats to locals during a visit to Walthamstow.

THE leader of the Liberal Democrats visited Walthamstow last week.

Nick Clegg MP took a stroll along Europe’s longest street market to meet stallholders and local businesses to see how they were tackling the recession.

He was greeted by the Lib Dem party on Waltham Forest Council, which recently won an accolade from their leader as the Lib Dem council group of the year.

Mr Clegg said he wanted to see how people in some of the less affluent areas of the capital were coping in the recession.

He said: “This is an extremely difficult time for everyone at the moment and we all need to pull together to get through the economic downturn.

“It is encouraging to see how the people of Walthamstow are coming together, but at the same time is concerning that so many people are still struggling to cope.”

Mr Clegg said he was drawn to the area to see how the world famous market area was coping.

“It would be a great shame to see such a iconic part of London disappear because of the recession,” he added.
